If your Vaillant boiler has stopped working and there’s an F-code flashing on the display, you’re not alone. Vaillant boiler error codes appear whenever the boiler’s internal diagnostics detect something isn’t right, and the code itself is actually useful. It tells you roughly where the fault lies before an engineer even arrives. Below, we’ve explained the most common Vaillant fault codes, what tends to cause them, and which ones are safe to check yourself.

What Do Vaillant Fault Codes Mean?
Vaillant boilers display faults as a letter followed by a number, most commonly starting with an “F” (for example, F.28). Each code corresponds to a specific problem the boiler’s control board has picked up, whether that’s a pressure issue, a sensor fault, or a failed ignition attempt.
The code itself isn’t the fault; it’s a pointer towards it. Some, like low pressure, can be resolved in a couple of minutes. Others point to a component that needs replacing and should be left to a qualified engineer.
Common Vaillant Fault Codes on ecoTEC Models
These are the Vaillant fault codes homeowners across South and West Yorkshire and Derbyshire ask us about most often.
- F.22 – Low water pressure. The system pressure has dropped too low for the boiler to operate safely, so it’s shut itself down as a precaution. This is usually the simplest code to deal with.
- F.28 – Ignition failure. The boiler tried to light and couldn’t establish a flame. In winter, this is very often a frozen condensate pipe rather than a fault with the boiler itself.
- F.29 – Loss of flame during operation. The boiler lit successfully but the flame then cut out. This can be linked to gas supply, the flue, or a sensor issue.
- F.75 – Pressure sensor / pump fault. The boiler started the pump but didn’t detect the expected change in pressure. This can mean low system pressure, a failing pump, or sludge affecting the sensor.
- F.61 – Gas valve fault. The boiler has detected the gas valve isn’t behaving as expected.
- F.32 – Fan fault. The boiler’s fan isn’t reaching or maintaining the speed the control board expects.
Which Vaillant Fault Codes Can I Check Myself?
A couple of these are genuinely fine to look at before calling an engineer:
- F.22 (low pressure). Check the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler. If it’s reading below 1 bar, you can usually top it up yourself using the filling loop, following the instructions in your boiler’s user manual. If the pressure keeps dropping and needs repeated topping up, that points to a leak somewhere in the system and shouldn’t just be topped up indefinitely.
- F.28 in winter. If this appears during a cold snap, it’s worth checking whether the white or grey condensate pipe on the outside of your property is frozen. If it is, this can sometimes be gently thawed using warm (not boiling) water poured over the outside section. Once thawed, the boiler can usually be reset.
Everything else on the list above, and any code that returns immediately after resetting, should be left to a Gas Safe registered engineer. That includes anything involving the gas valve, ignition components, or flue.
When to Call a Gas Safe Engineer
Some Vaillant fault codes should never be treated as a DIY job. If you’re seeing F.29, F.61, F.75, F.32, or any code that comes straight back after a single reset, stop resetting it and get a professional out. These typically point to a component fault, such as a gas valve, pump, or fan, and working on gas appliances or their internal parts must always be left to a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Persistent fault codes are also often a sign that a boiler is overdue a service. An annual service checks the components most likely to trigger these lockouts and helps keep your manufacturer warranty valid.
FAQ: Vaillant Boiler Error Codes
Why does my Vaillant boiler keep showing the same fault code after I reset it?
A fault code that returns straight after a reset means the underlying cause hasn’t been fixed, only masked. Repeated resets won’t clear a genuine fault and can add extra strain on the ignition components. If a code comes straight back, stop resetting and book in a Gas Safe registered engineer to diagnose the actual cause.
Is it safe to reset a Vaillant boiler fault code myself?
Pressing the reset button once is generally safe on most Vaillant models and can clear a one-off glitch. But if the same code reappears immediately, or it relates to the gas valve, ignition, or flame detection, don’t keep resetting it. That’s a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
